According to information released from Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver, deputies were dispatched to a residence in the Broomtown community early Thursday morning after receiving a 911 call from a woman who stated that a man had entered her residence, assaulted her, and left.

Deputies arrived at the scene to find the woman badly beaten.  While Cherokee EMS treated the victim, paramedics and law enforcement discovered the woman's bed had been set on fire.  The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Investigators with the Sheriff's Office and the State Fire Marshals Office also responded to the scene and collected information and evidence.  Authorities were able to identify a possible suspect and obtained an arrest warrant for 45 year old Charles Clayton Todd, Jr. of FortPayne.

Investigators immediately began looking for Todd and were later joined by the U.S.Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force.  The suspect was located at approximately 11pm in a wooded area off County Road 60 in Broomtown.  Todd was arrested and charged with second degree assault and is currently being housed in the  Cherokee County Detention Center on $150,000 cash bond.  The investigation is ongoing and other charges are expected to be filed.
