Stolen Boat Trailer Recovered

01/16/2012

According to Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver, on Sunday, January 15, 2012, 2 fishermen from Kentucky put their boat in Weiss Lake at Yellow Creek boat ramp and began fishing just past the bridge when they saw a black SUV leave the boat ramp with their trailer in tow.  The suspect was traveling south on Highway 273 toward Leesburg but turned around and headed north passing the fisherman at the boat ramp at a high rate of speed.  Deputies Tony Monroy and Matt Peek responded to the scene.  The store owner saw the suspect and was able to provide a description and partial tag number, which enabled deputies to identify the suspect as Dusty Ray Cavin, 27, of Gaylesville.  Cavin was spotted in Cedar Bluff and when officers questioned him concerning the theft, he admitted responsibility and led authorities to the stolen trailer. Sheriff Shaver spoke with the victims at the scene and they expressed great appreciation for the deputies' quick response and hard work in solving the case and returning their property so quickly.
