Starting later this week, the Sheriff's Office will kick off a Labor Day Safety Blitz that will continue through the end of Labor Day weekend. An increased number of deputies will patrol the roadways and waterways in Cherokee County during this holiday safety blitz.

According to Sheriff Jeff Shaver, the main goal for having deputies working additional shifts, is to help make sure everyone gets where they're going SAFELY.

In addition to the additional patrols on Cherokee County roadways, deputies will also be conducting extra patrols on the County's waterways.

Most of the funding for this Labor Day Safety Blitz is made possible through a grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Development.

SAFE DRIVING TIPS

-Seat belts save lives. Whether you're heading out on a long road trip or just somewhere closer to home, buckle up - every trip, every time, everyone.

-Drinking and driving is a selfish choice that puts others at risk. Make the responsible choice - plan for a safe and sober ride home- never drink and drive.

-Speeding is more than just breaking the law. Speeding endangers not only the life of the speeder, but all of the people on the road around them, including other motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists and law enforcement officers. The consequences of speeding are far-ranging an include the following: greater potential for loss of vehicle control, reduce effectiveness of occupant protection equipment, increased stopping distance after driver perceives a danger, and increased degree of crash severity leading to more severe injuries.

-Distracted driving is dangerous and can be deadly. When you're driving, put phones down and focus on driving.
