Triple Homicide at Round Mountain

   According to Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver, three people were killed and another was wounded shortly after midnight on Monday, November 16, 2015, at a residence on County Road 664 near the Round Mountain community. As authorities were responding to the scene, the suspect fled and struck a deputy’s vehicle. A pursuit ensued, which ended when the suspect wrecked in Sand Rock. Donnie Lee Abernathy, 38, of Centre was taken into custody. He was treated at a hospital and currently is being held in the Cherokee County Detention Center on charges of capital murder, first degree kidnapping, first degree criminal mischief, and attempting to elude. A female, who was abducted from the residence, was also in the vehicle. She was treated at a hospital and released. Officers from all local police agencies, Cherokee County Major Crimes Unit, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, and Coroner Jeremy Deaton responded to the scene. The JSU Center for Applied Forensics processed the crime scene. This case is being investigated by the Cherokee County Major Crimes Unit.
