According to Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver, a woman called to report her former husband was angry and shooting inside their residence in the Tecumseh community. The woman and her daughter were standing outside when Deputies Tyler Perea and Jeremy Stepps arrived at the scene. Deputies found 42 year-old Matthew Lee Smith inside the residence and observed damage to the property. Smith was apparently intoxicated and quickly became aggressive toward the deputies and struck Deputy Stepps in the head. Smith was arrested and transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center and charged with three counts of domestic violence, resisting arrest, and second degree assault. Stepps was treated and released at Cherokee Medical Center, where he received several stitches.
