According to Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver, on April 22, 2011, agents with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Unit along with investigators and deputies from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and Deputy State Fire Marshal Ray Cumby executed a search warrant at the residence of Michael Paul Roberts in the Spring Garden community. CNU Agents located and seized an active methamphetamine lab. While conducting a thorough search of the residence, Deputy Cumby located what appeared to be an explosive device and contacted the Alabama Bureau of Investigations Bomb Squad, who responded to the scene. An x-ray revealed the device was a homemade explosive, which was disarmed by the bomb squad. CNU Agents processed the meth lab and contacted One Stop Environmental to dispose of the hazardous materials.

Those arrested were Michael Paul Roberts, 52, of Piedmont and Jeffery Eugene Kerr, 41, of Centre.

Roberts was charged with trafficking methamphetamine, 1st degree unlawful manufacturing of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, 1st degree unlawful possession of marijuana, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a destructive/explosive device.

Kerr was charged with trafficking methamphetamine, 1st degree unlawful manufacturing a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, 1st degree unlawful possession of marijuana, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
